As of September 30, 2024, Alberta has introduced a new system for issuing Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for candidates applying to certain streams of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).
Candidates interested in applying to one of Alberta's worker streams must now submit a Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) through the AAIP portal. To do so, they will need to complete an online form detailing key personal information. The province has confirmed that there is no fee to submit a Worker EOI.
Ranking System for EOIs
Once an EOI is submitted, candidates will be placed in a Worker Stream pool and ranked according to a points grid that operates similarly to the federal Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Points will be awarded based on various human capital factors, including:
Candidates with higher scores will have a better chance of being selected for a provincial nomination. Invitations to apply will be sent to successful candidates by email.
Conditions for Submitting an EOI
Alberta has clarified that individuals who already have an existing Worker EOI, Entrepreneur EOI, or an active AAIP application must withdraw their existing application before creating a new Worker EOI.
Although the new system is in place, Alberta has stated that there is no need to rush as worker stream draws will not begin until mid to late October.
Changes to Alberta Worker Streams
Earlier this year, Alberta restructured the way it accepts applications for its Worker Streams to better manage high demand and align with provincial labor market priorities. In June, the province began limiting the number of applications accepted each month to maintain a balance between processing times and the 9,750 PNP nominations allocated to Alberta for 2024 by IRCC.
The impacted streams include:
This approach allows applicants to access the program year-round while ensuring efficient processing. Due to overwhelming demand, the province had temporarily paused applications for the Alberta Opportunity Stream earlier this year, from February to June, to focus on labor shortages in key sectors like healthcare, technology, construction, agriculture, tourism, and hospitality.
