The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ) have announced a significant update to their occupational classification frameworks.
While both countries will maintain comparable systems, they will introduce their own tailored classifications to better reflect local labor markets and meet stakeholder needs.
Australia's New Classification: OSCA
Australia will implement the new Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), 2024, version 1.0, set for release on Friday, December 6, 2024.
This update will replace the existing Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO), which has been jointly managed by ABS and Stats NZ since 2006.
Background – Transition from ANZSCO to OSCA
The ANZSCO system has provided a shared framework for classifying occupations in both countries for nearly two decades.
However, after careful consideration, ABS and Stats NZ agreed that tailored classifications would better address contemporary labor market conditions and local stakeholder needs.
Maintaining Alignment
While OSCA will be uniquely suited to Australia's requirements, ABS and Stats NZ have committed to ensuring the systems remain comparable and internationally aligned.
The agencies will continue collaborating closely to maintain consistency in occupational data standards and high-quality insights.
