Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the immediate closure of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for study permit applications. Additionally, the Nigeria Student Express (NSE) stream for Nigerian students has been discontinued.
Starting 08th November, all study permit applications will follow the standard application process.
The SDS, introduced in 2018, expedited study permit processing for students from 14 countries, including India, China, Pakistan, and the Philippines. Under the SDS, applicants had to meet specific requirements, such as providing language test results and proof of a Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) worth CAD 20,635.
As the SDS is no longer an option, prospective students should expect longer processing times compared to the previous expedited process. For instance, the current average processing time for study permits from India is 8 weeks.
