The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has expanded its list of accepted language tests for Canada PR applications to include the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core. This recent development, effective from 30th January, opens up new opportunities for applicants, with PTE Core being recognized across various immigration programs.

PTE Core Overview:

PTE Core is a computer-based English proficiency test comprising four modules: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. What sets it apart is its unique scoring system, where both humans and AI assess the test to reduce bias. The test is conducted in three parts, and the results are made available in less than 48 hours, making it a convenient option for applicants.

Scoring and Conversion:

PTE Core scores range from 0 to 90, with 90 being the highest score. To align with Canada's language proficiency requirements, these scores are converted into Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. For Canada PR eligibility, a minimum score equivalent to CLB 7 is required. This translates to achieving scores in the range of 60-68 for reading, 69-78 for writing, 60-70 for listening, and 68-75 for speaking.

Preparation Tips:

Preparing for the PTE Core is crucial for success. Here are some tips to help you achieve the desired scores:

  1. Familiarize Yourself with the Test Format: Understand the format of each section - Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Refer to the provided table for timings and sections.
  2. Practice Regularly: Utilize free sample questions available online to practice and gain insights into question types and difficulty levels. Seek feedback to enhance your performance.
  3. Improve English Skills: Work on grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency, as the test assesses everyday English skills. Learn effective strategies to tackle different question types.
  4. Registration and Validity: Once prepared, register and book the test online by paying the test fee. Keep in mind that the results are valid for 2 years. If your score expires while awaiting Canada PR visa approval, it will not be considered.
  5. Accepted Language Tests: PTE Core replaces the previously accepted PTE Essentials test. Now, there are five language tests accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration, covering both English and French proficiency.

For English:

  • CELPIP General Test
  • IELTS General Training
  • PTE Core

For French:

  • TEF Canada
  • TCF Canada

With the inclusion of PTE Core in the accepted language tests, prospective immigrants to Canada have a wider range of options. Adequate preparation is key, and with the right approach, individuals can meet the language proficiency requirements for their chosen immigration pathway.

Now the choice is yours!

Whether you decide to take IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE Core, you must achieve the minimum scores required to qualify for Canada PR from India. Prepare well to ace any English proficiency tests and start your Canada immigration process on the right foot.
