February 17, 2025 – Canada has strengthened its immigration regulations, granting border and immigration officers expanded powers to revoke temporary resident documents, including study and work permits. The new rules, implemented by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), took effect on January 31, 2025, and were published in Canada Gazette II.
Under the revised regulations, officers can cancel electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) and temporary resident visas (TRVs) if individuals are found inadmissible, provide false information, have a criminal record, or experience changes in their circumstances. Furthermore, study and work permits can be revoked in specific cases, such as when the permit holder becomes a permanent resident, passes away, or the document was issued due to an administrative error.
The policy aims to enhance immigration integrity and border security, ensuring that temporary residency is granted only to those who meet and maintain eligibility requirements.
