DHS Extends Work Permit Renewals for H-1B and L-1 Visa Spouses

Publish Date: 12/12/2024

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an extension of the automatic work permit renewal period for spouses of H-1B and L-1 visa holders from 180 days to 540 days, starting January 13, 2025. This policy applies to applications filed on or after May 4, 2022.

The extension aims to mitigate work interruptions caused by processing delays, benefiting thousands of eligible spouses, including H-4 visa holders (spouses of H-1B visa holders) and L-2 visa holders (spouses of L-1 visa holders).

“Since January 2021, the American economy has created more than 16 million jobs, and the Department of Homeland Security is committed to helping businesses fill them,” said Alejandro N. Mayorkas, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

This update reflects DHS’s commitment to supporting both families and the economy by providing greater career stability for work-authorized visa holders.
