New Zealand Extends Visa Duration for Partners of Citizens: Now 3 Years!

Publish Date: 23/09/2024

In a significant update for couples, the Government of New Zealand has announced an increase in the maximum duration for work and visitor visas for partners of New Zealand citizens and residence class visa holders. Effective from 1 October 2024, the visa duration for those who have been living together for at least 12 months will extend from 2 years to 3 years.

This change is designed to provide couples with additional time to save for residence application fees and to better align with the visa durations offered to partners of temporary migrants.

The new rules will apply to applications received on or after 1 October 2024 and to those applications that have already been submitted but are still pending a decision.

However, current visas will not be automatically extended; applicants will need to submit a new application to take advantage of the longer visa duration.
