Canada Has Revised Family Open Work Permit Eligibility, Effective From 21st January 2025!

Publish Date: 15/01/2025

As of January 21, 2025, Canada’s Family Open Work Permit (OWP) eligibility will change. Only spouses of certain international students and foreign workers will be eligible to apply, while dependent children of foreign workers will no longer qualify.

Key Changes:

  • Spouses of International Students in master's, doctoral, or selected professional programs will be eligible.
  • Spouses of Foreign Workers in high-skilled jobs (TEER 0 or 1) or specific sectors with labor shortages can apply.
  • Dependent children will no longer qualify for a Family OWP.

Unexpired OWPs will remain valid. Family members can renew their permits if needed. Those no longer eligible can apply for other work permits.
Employers should verify eligibility under the new rules from January 21, 2025
