The Permanent Residency (PR) visa labels of parents are no longer considered valid proof of an applicant's citizenship.
If born in Australia on or after August 20, 1986, and having one or both parents as Australian permanent residents at that time, applicants must now provide evidence of their own Australian citizenship.
To prove citizenship, applicants must obtain a citizenship certificate issued by the Department of Home Affairs. Applicants need to submit Form 119 - Application for evidence of Australian citizenship to obtain the necessary certificate.
Before making travel plans, applicants should factor in the processing times for both citizenship certificates and passports.
