Edmonton, Alberta

The Government of Alberta has launched a new initiative aimed at attracting skilled immigrants to the province’s trade industry. Under the "Alberta is Calling" program, the province is offering a one-time refundable tax credit of $5,000 to up to 2,000 eligible skilled tradespeople who choose to relocate to Alberta in 2024.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this incentive, candidates must:

  •   Be 18 years or older at the time of application.
  •   Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
  •   Move to Alberta between May 1 and December 31, 2024.
  •   Establish tax residency in Alberta by December 31, 2024.
  •   Have resided in Alberta for at least 12 consecutive months at the time of application.
Addressing Labour Shortages in Alberta's Trades Industry

The Alberta government's new program is designed to address ongoing labour shortages in the trades industry, which remains one of the most in-demand sectors in the province. As of now, nine trade occupations have been identified by the government as high-demand roles, including:

  • Construction Managers (NOC 70010)
  • Automotive Service Technicians, Truck and Bus Mechanics, and Mechanical Repairers (NOC 72410)
  • Plumbers (NOC 72300)
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NOC 21310)
  • Civil Engineers (NOC 21300)
  • Engineering Managers (NOC 20010)
  • Automotive and Heavy Truck and Equipment Parts Installers and Servicers (NOC 74203)
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians (NOC 22310)
  • Electrical Mechanics (NOC 72422)
Opportunities in Alberta

Alberta's trade sector has long been a critical part of the province's economy, yet it continues to face significant challenges in filling key roles. With 76,500 job vacancies as of May 2024—third only to Ontario and Quebec—the province is positioning itself as an attractive destination for skilled tradespeople both within and outside of Canada.

This new incentive underscores Alberta's commitment to building a skilled workforce, ensuring long-term economic growth, and providing newcomers with ample opportunities to succeed in the province.
